There's no need for me to be poetic. Remember that time you saw this man #PhilandoCastile get shot and killed on facebook #Live w/ his girlfriend and 4 year old daughter in the back seat? Remember the outrage and disbelief? The police officer who killed him was acquitted of all charges...but you knew that was going to happen too. If another black man had killed him that other black man would already be in prison for 25 to life. And justifiably so. Want to kill a black person and get away with it? Join the police force. And yes, I get it, accidents happen. It's crazy how someone can sue McDonald's for being burned by hot coffee because the cup didn't have a warning label, but one can't hold a police officer accountable for shooting and killing someone without reason. This is not an anti-cop rant. There are police officers that I know and love and would happily put my life in their hands. The police force and the justice system in general, however, are institutions that I no longer believe in. I'm not speaking out of anger. I'm actually not mad at all nor surprised. I was just hopeful. But "hope" died when Obama left office. I just know I have a lot of stories to tell, all of us do. And apparently I have people that like hearing them. And I "hope" that if something like this were ever to happen to me that folks would understand that this would be the end of my story. That I would be stripped of my ability to tell the world who I am. And all because someone feared me. Because something about my black skin struck fear into their heart that they felt the need to protect themselves from any potential danger. Like my blackness has a mind of its own and might potentially overpower whatever will or sanity or love I might have enacted in order to keep it in its place. Because my blackness is seen and judged far before my character. I am presumed to be from a rough neighborhood or poor or dangerous or angry or oversexed or thuggish or in the know of where the drugs at or likely to steal or at college on a sports scholarship or fatherless or misogynistic or without goals or without dreams or without promise or without a chance...
