Comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory made his Carnegie Hall debut #OTD—April 7—in 1962. The midnight performance also featured Babatunde Olatunji and his Drums of Passion.⁠⁠

Gregory performed at the Hall a total of nine times, including a 1964 performance presented by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) with vocalist Nina Simone. He was a committed political activist and advocate, especially throughout the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.⁠⁠
