Command Module Pilot Jim Lovell aboard the Apollo 8 spacecraft said this as he, Commander Frank Borman, and Lunar Module Pilot William Anders held a live broadcast from lunar orbit on Dec. 24, 1968. Anders captured the iconic Earthrise image, shown in the first image, which reveals the Earth peeking out from beyond the lunar surface as the first crewed spacecraft circumnavigated the Moon.

Artemis builds on the experience of Apollo. During the Artemis I mission, the uncrewed Orion spacecraft surpassed the distance record for a mission with a spacecraft designed to carry humans to deep space and back to Earth. The record was set during the Apollo 13 mission at 248,655 miles (400,171 km) from our home planet. Orion reached its maximum distance from Earth during the Artemis I mission when it was 268,563 miles (432,210 km) away. During the Artemis II mission around the Moon and back, astronaut Christina Koch will travel farther in space than any woman ever has.
