There’s no place like foam 🔥

Technicians at NASA_Marshall are applying foam to the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket’s launch vehicle stage adapter (LVSA), the cone-shaped element that connects the rocket’s core stage to its upper stage.

The foam is one part of the thermal protection system in the LVSA, along with traditional insulation materials like cork, that provide fire protection to all elements of the SLS rocket. In a process that takes about two weeks, two technicians will hand spray the LVSA with 20 individual spray lines before respraying the section this summer. This foam is a critical component of the SLS rocket that will send astronauts back to the lunar surface with #Artemis III.

Image description: Wearing clean room suits, two technicians at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, apply the first round of spray foam as part of the thermal protection system to the LVSA. The adapter is yellow with red outlines, and the technician to the left is holding a silver and black spray gun that applies white foam to the LVSA.

Credit: NASA/Brandon Hancock

#Orion #SLS #Moon #Space #NASA #LunarMission #STEM #MegaMoonRocket #Foam
