Dr. Luis Zea’s reaction says it all!

This video captures Dr. Zea’s first look at his study of yeast cells that traveled around the Moon inside the Orion spacecraft launched aboard Artemis I. His excitement comes after initial observations indicate that the experiment worked as it was supposed to, with healthy yeast growth also noticeable!

These observations are particularly encouraging for Dr. Zea and his team because they had no data on the experiment during its orbit around the Moon and therefore did not know that it had worked until it returned to Earth. This investigation will pioneer scientific discovery by studying the yeast cells to determine which genes provide cells with a higher probability of survival and the types and doses of radiation experienced beyond the Van Allen Belts surrounding Earth.

The hardware responsible for activating the experiment once Orion passed the Earth’s magnetosphere includes parts developed by researchers at the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, where Dr. Zea himself studied. The liquid shown in the video contains the approximately 12,000 yeast mutants that grew in cislunar space.

This study is one of four experiments sponsored by NASA’s Biological & Physical Sciences Division which focus on investigating biological systems aboard Artemis I. The final results from these experiments will come later, once scientists have processed the samples in the lab.

Video credit: NASA/Luis Zea and Ariana Lutsic
Music credit: Universal Production Music

#NASA #Artemis #Space #Science #Biology #Experiment #Investigation #Yeast
