What does it feel like to sit on top of a rocket with 8.6 million pounds of thrust? A table in Sandusky, Ohio, could give you a taste.
The Service Module test article is placed on the 22-foot-wide, 55,000-pound vibration table that simulates the shaking the #spacecraft will experience when launching on top of its rocket. The table is attached to a 4.5 million pound concrete seismic mass anchored 50 feet into bedrock using 106 tension anchors. It can sometimes be hard to see the movement because the vibration is so fast, so believe it or not, a hula doll is perched at the top to give observers a backup visual of the vibration intensity. Interesting huh?
NASA is testing the heart of Orion’s power systems at the world’s largest, most powerful space environment simulation facility. Test engineers at #NASA Glenn Research Center’s Space Power Facility in Sandusky, Ohio, are putting a full-size test version of the European Service Module for the spacecraft through a series of crucial tests to verify the structural integrity of the hardware to withstand the dynamic environment of launch into space atop the agency’s Space Launch System #rocket.
Orion is the NASA spacecraft that will send astronauts to deep-space destinations, including on toward the journey to Mars. The SLS rocket with Orion atop is targeted to launch from Kennedy’s Launch Pad 39B in 2018. Credit: NASA/Rad Sinyak #orion #JourneytoMars #sls #test #launch #cool #technology #NASAglenn
