Which do you like more? Strict Press or Push Press? Let us know below! 💬 If you know us, then you know our answer is "it depends". Both have their own specific application in training. What are some of the key differences?

⭐ Starting position ⭐ In a push press, the rep starts from a front rack position, though grip and elbow position might need to be adjusted slightly to ensure full grip around the bar. Every rep starts from the front rack.

In a strict press, the very first rep does not necessarily start from a traditional front rack (bar contacting the shoulders/chest). The important part is that your elbows are pointed down and inline with the bar or slightly ahead of the bar. Depending on arm lengths, this means the bar might be touching a lifters chest, or could be a couple inches above the chest. Once the bar is lifted overhead for the first time, technically each subsequent rep starts in the overhead position, NOT at the chest (similar to bench press)

⭐ Execution ⭐ In a push press, the movement uses a "dip and drive" technique to allow the legs and hips to aide in getting the bar overhead. This is an explosive lift, with the purpose of training for power, as well as transfer to an Olympic jerk. Because of this, more weight can and should be handled than with a strict press.

The strict press, as evident by the name, uses no leg drive whatsoever. While the rest of the body works to stay stable and provide a strong base of support, the shoulders and arms do the heavy lifting.
