Whether something is simple or complex is not a measure of its efficacy or value. Some things are necessarily complex while others are innately simple. It’s easy to overcomplicate things. The goal in teaching, coaching, programming and exercise selection should always be simplify to the point of highest value. ⠀
⠀
Overcomplicating the simple and oversimplifying the complex are hallmarks of a novice. Often, novices overcomplicate in an attempt to appear competent. Social media is filled with laughable examples of unnecessarily complicated training methods. Be weary of judging the efficacy of a training method by the number of “likes” it garners. These same individuals are also prone to oversimplification of complex concepts because they don’t have a thorough understanding of the subject. The Dunning-Kruger effect indicates these individuals are likely not even aware of the errors they make so they speak with undeserved confidence. ⠀
⠀
Experts recognize the importance of simplicity and will make every effort to distill a matter to its essence. They teach, coach and program using methods that are only as complicated as necessary and never more. They are often labeled ‘old school’ or ‘basic.’ Rather than insults, these should be viewed as badges of honor. ‘Old school’ often means something has stood the test of time and scrutiny. ‘Basic’ is an indication simplicity. ⠀
⠀
There is a time and place for experimentation. There is a time and place for novel and unique methods. But be weary of those who overcomplicate the simple and oversimplify the complex. ⠀
