It’s time for another #slomomonday. This one’s a video of a max power clean effort from Athletic Lab Track Club member dan_normoyle that was shot before our COVID-19 forced closure. ⠀
⠀
In the video you can see Dan hit a 130 kg (286 lbs) power clean at a bodyweight of 80 kg (176 lbs). That is a load equivalent to 1.63 times bodyweight. This is a very good power to bodyweight ratio. ⠀
⠀
Generally speaking, we like our male athletes in sports like Track & Field and Football (🏈) to have power cleans above 1.5x their body mass. Females will be slightly less but are often quite close to that mark and we’ve had several exceed it. Several of our more powerful athletes have power cleaned as high as 2x their body mass. ⠀
⠀
Despite the lift being a max attempt the technique is clean and he catches the bar relatively high. This indicates that he could lift more if he were able to receive the bar lower. It’s rare to see max effort lifts with technique this good. ⠀
⠀
While we always aspire for technical perfection we recognize that on truly max efforts that technique may begin to breakdown. In these cases there is an acceptable allowance that allows athletes to still truly test their maximum capacity while keeping the risk-reward favorable. The trick is pushing close to the edge of technical failure but not exceeding it. ⠀
⠀
What do you think about his technique? What are your thoughts on technique during max efforts? Is technical breakdown acceptable? Share your thoughts to the comments. ⠀
