How strong is strong enough?
⠀
This question is a hotly debated question in the field of strength & conditioning. Some suggest that strength has limited value to the often chaotic & unpredictable world of sports performance. People on this side of the fence will point to athletes who excel in spite of much weight room strength. They’ll point to the fact that speed and power seem to be more important physical qualities than strength on the actual field of play. On the other hand, you have mounds of research and anecdotal evidence pointing to the importance of a high level of strength for qualities like change of direction, early phase acceleration, and jumping. ⠀
⠀
The fact of the matter is that STRENGTH MATTERS....up until a point. And after that point, it’s not a bad thing and won’t necessarily hurt performance but pursuing more of it at the expense of other qualities is likely not the best return on your investment. So where is that point? It’s tough to say and it will differ by athlete and sport but the current research literature suggests that the point of diminishing returns begins around the level of a 2x bodyweight squat. Athletes may continue to see improvements beyond this point on early phase acceleration, standing jump performance and change of direction abilities but the relationship appears to drop off very steeply around a 2.2x bodyweight load in the squat. ⠀
