What should conditioning look like for a “big guy?” ⠀
.⠀
Many sports (like some positions in 🇺🇸 football and rugby, bobsleigh, and heavyweights in weight classed sports) reward athletes for being massive (tall and heavy) and powerful. Many mistakenly assume that the conditioning that is appropriate for much smaller endurance based athletes is also suitable for these Goliaths. The very things that make these athletes succeed in their sport would only be diminished by using overly repetitive, high impact, purely aerobic based conditioning (like steady state running). Even worse, it might raise their likelihood for injury because the impact forces of activities like high volume running with larger individuals is particularly risky. ⠀
.⠀
So rather than resorting to using conditioning methods more appropriate for lighter and more endurance based athletes, we try to develop overall work and aerobic capacity in a manner that is appropriate for their sport while minimizing the likelihood for injury. By incorporating a variety of training means and minimizing repetitive impact forces we can introduce a high level of systemic (rather than localized) fatigue that enhances their work and aerobic capacity in a sensible and productive manner. ⠀
.⠀
In this circuit, professional football players bigsimba75 and phil__haynes do a ‘strongman circuit’ involving battling ropes, farmers walks and moderate load sled pushes. Each round involved approximately 80-90 seconds of moderate-intensity work. This was followed by 90-100 seconds of rest and repeated for a total of 6 times. ⠀
.⠀
This type of training can be used with smaller, lighter athletes too! ⠀
