The ability to accelerate well is a critical part of success in almost all sports. Acceleration ability is underpinned by the ability to generate large horizontal forces in to the ground. As with most things related to sprinting, this has both physical and technical contributions. In this particular acceleration drill we use a medicine ball to address both. The mass of the medicine ball serves to overload the physical component of the initial push and forces the athlete to overcome inertia that is supra-maximal to what would be encountered in sport. The medicine ball also provides great external feedback to guide the technical component. An inefficient application of force on the initial push will be highlighted by the use of a medicine ball and often leads to “AHA moments.” Inefficient positions and improper direction of the force in to the ground will result in poor displacement of the body-plus-ball system and many athletes are better able to recognize which positions are effective and which are not. I find this exercise is great for discovery learning because it helps athlete know when they “got it right” without me having to coach much. I like to use this drill during general prep periods of training because it matches well with my focus on acceleration and concentric strength development during those periods . 🖊 Written by Mike Young mikeyoungphd
