The concept of sport specificity is a widely accepted way of training athletes for sport. But many make the mistake of taking this concept to the extreme. This is often seen by attempting to mimic sporting activities in the gym. Well-intentioned attempts to increase sport specificity often results in a loss of physical loading and this is an unacceptable compromise. The gym is best served at developing physical capacities and this requires physiological overload. .
Remember, athletes are more similar than they are different. Among other things, they share the same joints and muscles, the same basic physiology, and all human movement is governed by the overarching laws of physics. Athletic development coaches should keep these similarities in mind when designing training plans for athletes of various sports. Use the sport to train the specifics of that sport and use your athletic development sessions to enhance overall athletic development. Create physical monsters by focusing on basics rather than under-loading activities that mimic the sport. Add sport relevance by tweaking exercise selection and loading parameters rather than going overboard with sport specificity.
