One of the most common mistakes amongst athletes while accelerating is thinking that short and choppy steps during acceleration are beneficial. Short and choppy steps do not allow the athlete to put maximal force in to the ground or maximize the impulse-momentum relationship. In the early steps of acceleration, the athlete has a rare opportunity to apply huge forces over a (relatively) long ground contact time. This maximizes the ability of the athlete to cause a change in their state of motion (acceleration!) We want to see athletes apply maximal force over the optimal time period. This is why we coach our athletes to have complete pushes with a horizontal emphasis during the first steps of an acceleration. #speed #sprinting #tracklife #speedscience #sportsscience #biomechanics #physics
