Taking English classes and working full-time was so exhausting for Jackie Ruiz she had begun to think her dream of speaking English would never come true. When she moved to Colorado in 2018, Jackie knew she would have to speak English to continue both her education and her profession. She found Emily Griffith online and, impressed with its long tradition of serving immigrants, she enrolled. “I tried English in other places, but Emily Griffith has the strongest program and is the most affordable,” according to Jackie. Heather Colwell, ELA Student Navigator, talked to Jackie's class about the CAREERS program and invited Jackie to join. They started meeting once a week to clarify Jackie’s goals and determine what classes she needed to reach them. Doors started to open. Jackie decided to focus on school as much as possible, so she quit her full-time barista job and found a part-time job on weekends. Through the CAREERS program, she started the process of moving her college degree from Panama to Denver and of tailoring her resume to apply for professional positions. In addition to Emily Griffith, Jackie got help from the public library’s Plaza Program, and also from Mi Casa, a program that specializes in helping people create economic success. She found a job in her profession - Marketing - at @thegrowhaus, an indoor farm in north Denver dedicated to food production and food education. Of course, Jackie hasn’t stopped dreaming. She hopes to eventually pursue a Master’s degree here in the United States. “Make friends with English speakers,” she advises. “Take as many classes as you can, take advantage of all the resources out there, but be clear about your priorities. If you are working 60 hours a week, you may not have time to improve your English or regain your career.
