Student Highlight: Meet Isaac Ponte! When Isaac, a Peruvian, visited Denver for a 2-week vacation, no one could have predicted he would meet his future wife. At 32 years old, Isaac had played professional soccer for a decade and recently completed his University degree in Business Administration. His future looked bright in Lima. But love changed everything. Soon he was married to his American bride and living in Denver. Isaac knew that the only way to be successful in his new country was to become fluent in English and find a career to support himself and his future family. That’s where Emily Griffith came in. After months of diligent study in English classes, Isaac passed the TABE entrance exam and prepared to enter one of EGTC’s career and technical programs. But which one? With many different programs to choose from, Isaac tried to connect his past experience and interests to a new career path. As a soccer player, he’d been injured twice – his Achilles tendon and an internal ligament. The rehabilitation had been difficult, but Isaac remembered how much he had valued the physical therapists who had helped him return to the game he loved. He believed he, too, could help people recover. Enrolling in our Nurse Assisting program is Isaac's first step on his path toward becoming a Physical Therapy Assistant. What’s it like to be an English Language Learner in a challenging academic program? “The most difficult part is trying to explain each of the 25 skills we have to do as CNAs,” Isaac said. “There is so much new vocabulary and new phrases – like ‘roll over,’ for example.” But Isaac is up for the challenge. To become certified, Isaac will have to pass a competency exam administered by the State Board of Nursing. Good luck, Isaac!
