at my previous internship with the amazing alliancefored , i had the chance to work and learn more about eating disorders. this week is the #nationaleatingdisorderawarenessweek & i feel the importance to understand the complexity of eating disorders is imperative to create conversations.
as a female athlete, there is over a 1/3 chance of creating habits that lead to an eating disorder. that statistic is skyrocketing as we live in an era of social media & trying to balance being athletic while fitting the aesthetic. looking around at my teammates, knowing that the odds of that occurring to 1/3 of people i love is terrifying yet so easy to fall into. going deeper, BIPOC are 50% less likely to receive help and care. having a healthy relationship with food can be draining & feel impossible. fitting in sports and school can be so busy and consuming food can become less of a priority when trying to get everything finished.
this week is important to recognize how dangerous eating disorders are and how easily they can occur (especially in athletics). male athletes are also at a higher risk than a non athlete for falling into tendencies, so checking in with friends and teammates can be crucial for their health and safety.
social media is fake. editing. filters. everything imaginable is out there. let’s be honest- most people use them. including myself. don’t compare yourself to what you see. it’s really all fake and gut wrenching to admit. let’s open this conversation in sports and life in general. we are all worthy of self-love and confidence.
if you or a loved one is struggling with an eating disorder, there is help out there. the last slide has information about how to get help.
