He is the second male Japanese player to have been ranked in the top 5 in singles, and the only one to do so in the Open Era. His Davis Cup record for Japan is an extraordinary 19-3, and his bronze medal at the Rio Olympics made him the first Japanese player to earn a tennis medal in nearly 100 years.
