The Alyth Lodge has served Calgarians in several roles. Built by the Calgary Brewery in 1912, it was used as a hotel and social meeting place for brewery workers and C.P.R. Ogden Shop employees.⁣
 ⁣
With Ogden being more than 7 km from the saloons of downtown Calgary, situating a hotel in Ogden was a lucrative business prospect for the brewing company. The 64-bedroom hotel was planned to be the entertainment and social centre of the community. It featured the second-largest hotel dining room in the city, a basement bowling alley, billiards room, and a large bar room - its main attraction.⁣
 ⁣
In October 1915, the use of the building was donated to the Alberta Red Cross. From 1915 - 1919, hundreds of soldiers that were wounded in Europe recovered at the facility, then known as the Red Cross Convalescent Home.⁣
 ⁣
It was returned to the Calgary Brewery in 1920, and was purchased in 1935 by the provincial government, which turned it into a single men's relief hostel. In the 1970s, a private owner transformed the Alyth into a rooming house, with retail use on the ground floor. It has now been converted to low-cost apartments and retail space.⁣
 ⁣
It survives as one of only eight pre-World War One hotel buildings to remain in Calgary. Alyth Lodge is designated as a Municipal Historic Resource.⁣
