Byfield has such a rare combination of size, speed, and skill. Those tools alone make him such an intriguing prospect. That is why I have him at #2. Watching him play though often left me underwhelmed. It wasn’t just his World Juniors performance, but also at the Top Prospects Game, Hlinka Gretzky Cup, and even some OHL games that left you wondering why he didn’t make a larger overall impact. Byfield has such a powerful stride that he uses to attack in the offensive zone, but also to make a difference on the backcheck. He’s a terrific puck-transitioner who has a tremendous set of hands and dangles to throw at defenders. He’s very creative with the puck and is great at finding passes in the o-zone. His size helps him spin off checks, drive the net hard, and pounce on opportunities in front of the net.
