He’s the third-ranked Finnish-forward on our draft rankings. Simontaival is an incredibly talented offensive player. He is extremely speedy when transitioning the puck up ice, and loves to attack defenders at full speed. Like most smaller players, Simontaival is quick on his edges, and can maneuver out of traffic with great effectiveness. He’s got a good set of hands to get around defenders, but also to finish plays in tight-quarters around the net. He’s got excellent vision to find passing lanes in the offensive zone, and he has the talent to one day run a power-play (maybe second-unit) at the NHL level. Simontaival also impressed with his ability to pick-off passes in the neutral and defensive zones, and turn those plays into offense. He’s very good at slipping into soft-spots that turn into good scoring chances. That being said, he still needs to work on his overall defensive game, and will need to add strength to consistently beat NHL defenders. He was Finland’s go-to player at the Under-18 Five Nations tournament in February, where he really solidified his position as a first-round pick in our opinion.
