Is this unnecessary? 
Absolutely. 
Tools are built for work and will get dirty again. 
It was just one of those squirrels running around in my head that I wanted to try out. This halligan will get dirty and chipped again, but it was a fun rainy-day project. 

If you’re wanting to try it, save this post for a rainy day. 

Here’s what I used: 

Cheap buffer with cutting pads 
Harbor freight angle grinder with 120 grit disks
A 400-2000 grit sandpaper pack from Lowes
Harbor freight black and green compound 
Microfibers
