September 28th marks British Home Child Day in Canada. It recognizes the 100,000 boys and girls who were shipped across the Atlantic between 1869 and 1948.

They were orphans and children from poor families who could no longer afford to care for them. Children from across the British Isles were relocated including 15,000 from Scotland alone.

The program’s administrators felt these children would have better futures in Canada than in the industrial slums of Britain.

The initiative also gave rural Canada a much-needed labour force. Some of these children were adopted into good homes. Others faced incredibly hard and lonely lives as indentured labourers.

It is estimated that as many as 10% of all Canadians are descended from these young immigrants.

The memory of these children inspires the charitable work of St. Andrew’s Society of Toronto. The organization was founded in 1836 to help struggling Scottish immigrants. The modern Society continues to fund several local charities that support children.

Let’s work to keep families together and give every child in Toronto a promising future. Please consider joining the society or making a tax-deductible donation on our website today.

Together, we can accomplish great things.
