John Ross was of mixed Scottish and Cherokee heritage. He was the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1828–1866.

Ross’ Cherokee name was Mysterious Little White Bird. 
.
He led the Cherokee through such tumultuous events as the relocation to Indian Territory and the American Civil War. He held the position longer than any other person.
