A new national flag was needed to celebrate Jamaica's first Independence Day on this date in 1962.

William McGhie, a Presbyterian minister from Scotland, drafted a design by replacing the blue and white of the Scottish flag with Jamaica's national colours.

Jamaican Prime Minister Alexander Bustamante presented Reverend McGhie’s layout to the flag committee and won their approval. The rest is history!
