Bill Millin was born in Saskatchewan on this date in 1922. A statue in Normandy commemorates his incredible bravery during the D-Day invasion at Sword Beach.

Carrying no weapon other than a ceremonial dagger in his stocking, Millin piped Allied forces ashore and further inland. The invading forces were met with heavy gunfire.

As men fell around him, Millin played on. Captured German soldiers later revealed they did not shoot at him because they believed he'd gone mad!
