For those of you who don’t know. This is one my best buddies and teammates, Richard Perry. This August, Rich was involved in a bad accident during a team training camp in California.
Before the accident, Rich was scheduled to be my training partner for this year’s World Championships in Budapest. We were supposed to be traveling together today: making our way to Germany where Rich would help me make my final preparations for competition. Sadly, as I hop on that plane today to head to Europe, Rich remains back home in Philly, working toward recovery. Still I know he’ll be showing his love and support from thousands of miles away.
A few weeks ago I got to thinking. How could I honor Rich and his warrior spirit? I wanted to create a way in which I could have Rich with me vicariously.
Insert my man Daniel Ortiz(dodolovesthekids) If you follow the wrestling shoe game, then chances are you’ve heard of dodocustoms. I reached out to him asking if he could collaborate with me on a special project for Rich. I’m so thankful for Daniel and his willingness to help me create such a special ode to Rich. He’s a true artist with next-level skill. Here are a few of the elements that we decided to include on the shoe.
Perry Strong: Since Rich’s accident, there has been an overwhelming display of love from the wrestling community. We’ve all rallied behind the hashtag #PerryStrong in support of Rich and his family. His strength is immeasurable.

Overcomer: If you know Rich personally, you know that he has overcome a fare share of adversity throughout his life. We believe in his spirit, and his willingness to push through any circumstance. He has, and he will.
60k/30: This summer, Rich completed an insane challenge in which he did 60,000 push-ups in only 30 days. That’s 2,000 pushups a day!

Arms Raised in Praise: This photo was taken immediately after Rich made his first national team this season, finishing third in the nation at 86kg. A monumental achievement for a young man from a town in Connecticut with no wrestling history.
Whenever I step out on the mat, it’s always bigger than me. But this time feels just a little bit bigger.
