Salvadoran-American goalkeeper Idalia Serrano, who graduated from UCLA and now plays for Utah Valley Wolverines, spoke about her decision to represent El Salvador 🇸🇻 instead of waiting for a chance with the USWNT.

“I was born in the U.S. but my blood comes from here,” she said to El Gráfico TV in a recent interview. 

“It’s a responsibility to represent my family, my blood, my roots.”

“I have a lot of connection to El Salvador because most of my family are here. Aunts, uncles, etc.”

“I have very little family in the U.S. Here, we connect in a different way, I don’t have that in the U.S.”

“It’s something different that you can’t really explain.”

“Playing for El Salvador represents a lot to my family and I, but it’s more than just that,” Idalia said.

“It means bringing hope to a country, giving young girls an opportunity to dream.”

“This is a commitment I treasure and embrace.”

Idalia was born and raised in California to parents from El Salvador.

Ever since she was young, she goes back to El Salvador almost every year with her family, which created a strong bond with the country.

She got into soccer when she was around 12, and decided to be a keeper.

Idalia didn’t play high school soccer, opting to play for local clubs instead.

When she got into her dream school UCLA, she was only focused on getting her degree in political science.

But one day, she tried out for the team, and got selected after impressing the coaches.

After her performances in college earned her a starting spot for El Salvador, she’s thinking about playing professionally.

Currently a grad student in Utah Valley, Idalia played all three games for La Selecta Femenina in the W Gold Cup.

She admitted this feels like a dream.
