## Caption

Marcus Behmer, an artist featured in "The Pencil Is a Key: Drawings by Incarcerated Artists" worked primarily as a book illustrator and graphic designer in Weimar, Germany.  Behmer was also a member of the first known gay rights organization in the world, the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee, but devastatingly, in 1937 Behmer was sentenced to two years in prison in southern Germany for the crime of homosexuality. Behmer was recognized for his talent by a prison warden, who allowed him to continue drawing these fantastical renderings during the two years he was incarcerated.⁣

“The Pencil Is a Key: Drawings by Incarcerated Artists” is on view until January 5, 2020. Throughout the run of the exhibition, admission to The Drawing Center will be FREE (Wed - Sun, 12pm - 6pm | Thurs, 12pm - 8pm⁣
