As part of “Open Sessions 2018–2020: What’s Love Got to Do with It?” (on-view through Sept 15) we asked each of our artists-in-residence: “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” Open Sessions artist 2018-20 Esteban Cabeza de Baca responds below:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
What love has to do with my work is a love of nature even in the time of environmental collapse for humans. We know now the melting point of polar ice caps is inevitable. What we have done in the industrial revolution and into the contemporary will lead to global ecological collapse. But we can do things and coalitions (Idle No More) are fighting to spread information and new policies. My deepest compassion for the environment specifically of the southwest United States nurtures my landscape painting. I want to free how we represent the landscape from Cartesian perspective in order to free people's minds from colonizing ideology and to realize how we don’t exist in dualism with nature but it’s always present.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣

Esteban Cabeza de Baca lives and works in New York. His work has been shown at the Fons Welters Gallery (Amsterdam, NL), David Richard Gallery (Santa Fe, NM), Dickinson Gallery (New York, NY), Boers Li Gallery, and Gaa Gallery. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
