Artists have a variety of methods to make their mark. Every Friday we will share a photograph of an #ArtistInAction.

Nick Cave (b. 1959) is a multidisciplinary artist whose sculptural, dance, and performance practice extends into videoworks, installations, and live movement to explore concepts of belonging, community, and black identity. Cave describes himself as a messenger as his performances generate diverse audiences to experience spectacle and drama as a collective. Cave’s most famous work is an ongoing series of wearable sculptural costumes called “Soundsuits.” The fashion objects are wearable and cover the whole body as to conceal the body’s race, gender, and class. The suits are inspired by carnival and Dogon costumes, Rococo, and ball culture. “I’m totally consumed by the special attire that has a powerful and meaningful purpose within a culture,” Cave explains. “I’m looking at rituals and ceremonies: Mardi Gras, Indian clothing, West African pieces, Carnival in Trinidad.” The striking sculptural fashion pieces have an emotive power that is enrapturing both when used in motion and as still objects.
