“Open Sessions 2018-20: What's Love Got to Do with It?" on-view through Sept 15 is the full-museum exhibition of the third cycle of The Drawing Center’s Open Sessions program - a two-year artists’ residency with thirty one participants from around the world. Featuring new work by Open Session artists, “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” will include works on paper, video, multimedia and sculpture, as well as installation, all of which place contemporary drawing at the center of an evolving conversation about love. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Ester Partegàs’s work uses a range of sculptural approaches including photography and text to look at how we consume, discard, and assign value. Hamper (No Retention) is a three-dimensional facsimile of a generic mass-produced object. Partegàs writes: “We woke up to realize life was slipping through our fingers. Holes. Fissures. Scars. The wrinkles on our knuckles draw a path of survival and disbelief. I wasn’t ready for the journey. But who cares… what is this “me” anyway… a bunch of disparate directions pointing to a material mass that by gravity will univocally fall. Holes everywhere that open up to claustrophobia of the possible, a leap in the dark, ecstasy of the domestic.” Partegàs examines the most unassuming details of everyday life as a record of shared affective, social, political, and metaphysical connections between people and things. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Open Sessions is a two-year program which provides opportunities for selected artists to contextualize work and ideas through exhibitions, public programs, and critical dialogue, organized by Rosario Güiraldes and Lisa Sigal, Open Sessions Curators.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
