Ernesto Caivano (b.1972) is a New-York based artist who works primarily in drawing to create intricate narratives that take visual inspiration from a variety of sources including medieval manuscript illumination, Asian screen printing, and Art Nouveau. The sinuous inky lines tell stories inspired by fairy tales and mythology, and gradually unfold sometimes over several drawings. Caivano explains that “Instead of trying to figure out all the different interests I had and which to follow, I decided to see if I could put them all together. I loved science, history, and art. I loved the landscape, and I loved to figure out why cultures behave the way they do. I couldn't let anything go.” His most well-known work is an ongoing series entitled “After the Woods,” which began in 2001 and comprises of hundreds of drawings that center around the tale of a princess and knight that have been separated and are in search for each other in an imaginary realm. The landscape includes fantastical details and patterns that are as captivating as they are spookily entrancing. .
