Luis Camnitzer (b. 1937) is a German-born Uruguayan artist who after moving to New York, became a central figure of 1960s conceptualism. As a co-founder of the New York Graphic Workshop, Camnitzer sought to expand printmaking and did so primarily by incorporating language. Camnitzer’s use of language as medium led his work to shift towards addressing socio political problems in both Latin America and the United States. Troubled by the military regimes taking root in South American countries, Camnitzer responded to these political contexts in his printmaking. “Uruguayan Torture Series,” Camnitzer’s well-known series of etchings addressed the civil-military rule that overtook the country between 1973-85. The poignant photo etchings of hands and banal objects like water glasses and mugs, also include poetic texts printed beneath the image. The painfully still etchings hold psychological weight that use both word and image to evoke entrapment and pain. When speaking about the role of art, Camnitzer explained: “I see art as the area where one can and should make “illicit” connections, connections that are not allowed in disciplinary, fragmented thinking. Art illuminates them through questioning and allows (though not necessarily) for their possible affirmation after a critical and imaginative evaluation. This should be art’s social function, but it has been degraded by commerce.”
