Jenny Holzer (b.1950) is an American artist who uses language to provoke, agitate, and call attention to the injustices that lacerate our political and social fabric. Usually installed in public spaces via billboards, LED signs, or light projections, Holzer’s inflammatory proclamations are incisive responses to the inequitable circumstances that our socio-political systems breed. Truisms (1977–79) is Holzer’s most well-known series, which she began as a student of the Whitney’s celebrated independent study program. Upon seeing the rigorous reading assignments, Holzer synthesized these big ideas through the Truism series. “[The instructor] gave us a wonderful yet absolutely daunting reading list that, happily, I reacted against,” Holzer explained. “I reduced all the reading to one-liners.” Holzer posted these powerful one-liners throughout Manhattan in bold capital letters, and in the coming years would expand to include over 300 sentences with emphatic brevities like: “CATEGORIZING FEAR IS CALMING,” and “ABUSE OF POWER COMES AS NO SURPRISE.”
