Open Sessions Artist 2018-20: Esteban Cabeza de Baca on the Creative Block and Process
.
“When I have a creative block I either go out running, drawing, but not running at the same time, or think about different metaphorical interpretations of the same idea. I don't really get a block of ideas; it's more like I have too many ideas. What happens to block my creativity is not having resources or the difficulty of trying to match my concept with the capability of a medium. When I reach that point I go with the flow because if you resist you will sink. But blocks, whether with resources or stretching to the furthest extent of a medium, are inevitable. It's how you adapt and bounce back that determines your success.”
.
Esteban Cabeza de Baca lives and works between Amsterdam, New York, and New Mexico. His work has been awarded the 2018 Royal Painting Prize by The Dutch Royal Palace in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and shown at Fons Welters Gallery, Amsterdam; Boers-Li Gallery, New York; David Richard Gallery, Santa Fe.
.
Open Sessions is a two-year program which provides opportunities for selected artists to contextualize work and ideas through exhibitions, public programs, and critical dialogue, organized by Rosario Güiraldes and Lisa Sigal, Open Sessions Curators.
