Feng Mengbo (b. 1966) is a Chinese artist who self identifies as a “video game artist,” but whose digital media work aligns closely with Political Pop— a term used to refer to Chinese artists of the 1990s who criticized the new national fascination with wealth and commodity by juxtaposing Cultural Revolution propaganda with symbols of global capitalism like Coca-Cola logos. Mengbo grew up during the Cultural Revolution and was part of a generation that was greatly affected by China’s economic reform and open policy after the death of Mao Zedong. Often referred to as China’s “Godfather” of new media art, Mengbo takes imagery from classic video games like Super Mario Bros. and Street Fighter II along with Cultural Revolution motifs. One of Mengbo’s most famous works, Long March: Restart (2008), is an interactive video game that invites visitors to control the main character, a Red Army soldier who travels along a digital scroll projected onto the gallery wall. Although one of the first to embrace digital technology, Mengbo has recently begun to shift towards more material-based practices like calligraphy and painting. “I’m kind of a pioneer of digital art — the first one to own a computer and all the toys.” Mengbo explains, “But more and more I don’t see it as making me better or people’s lives better. So what’s it for? Real time global communication? Why? Why do we use that? Facebook, taking photos to share any time. Why?”
