Open Sessions Artist 2018-20: Joeun Aatchim on the Creative Block and Process
.
“Within myself, there is a division of labor -- a writer-self and the artist-self, which are often also my present-self and future-self, vice versa. They are employed by each other to rescue when either side is blocked. I believe there is a unique symbiotic relationship.
.
Each time I create images and visual objects in a struggle of being blocked, I try work as my own "fabricator," employed by my own future self, who don't ask "why." In this way, my present self can be fully immersed in the "creation" process without being distracted by the issue of what I am saying through my work. The responsibility of analyzing the work's voice falls to my future self, often is a 5 a.m. morning writer. I (she) writes 2-3 hours from the daybreak. The switch of selves can take as long as a few months or short as in 24 hrs, working with the daylight.
.
Most recently, my writer-self worked hard each morning to help my prolonged block-ness in my studio and she (and I) did find out the 1.reason and 2.resolution. So now, the artist is back at work rejoicing.” - joeun kim aatchim
Joeun Aatchim lives and works in Brooklyn. Her work has been shown at the Jewish Museum, the Long March Space in Beijing, and the SBC Gallery of Contemporary Arts in Montréal.
.
Open Sessions is a two-year program which provides opportunities for selected artists to contextualize work and ideas through exhibitions, public programs, and critical dialogue, organized by Rosario Güiraldes and Lisa Sigal, Open Sessions Curators.
