Open Sessions Artist 2018-20: Young Joo Lee on the Creative Block and Process

“I wish I knew the perfect remedy. I guess the important thing is to get out of my studio and see something else. I have the luxury of being able to walk around here in Cambridge, where I can see people moving around. When I was in LA, I used to go to a supermarket or a coffee shop near my studio. I work alone in the studio, so seeing how other people live at the same moment kind of refreshes my mind. Recently, I have been going to museums near my studio. The Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and the Museum of Natural History are great. Art museums are good too. Especially the older works of art are inspiring, because they seem quite far away from what I do, content and medium-wise, but I still find them beautiful and interesting — it kind of refreshes my approaches to what I am doing. In the evenings, I like to dance in my studio. Recently I have been listening to K-grooves. Though the songs are new, there’s something familiar to me, the emotional palette, which makes me feel at home. And of course, I always have nuts, dark chocolate and some interesting books in my studio.” - Young Joo Lee

Young Joo Lee lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work has been shown at the Echo Park Film Center, LA; the Anthology Film Archive NY; the Kunsthaus Bregenz, Bregenz.

Open Sessions is a two-year program which provides opportunities for selected artists to contextualize work and ideas through exhibitions, public programs, and critical dialogue, organized by Rosario Güiraldes and Lisa Sigal, Open Sessions Curators.
