Helen Mirra (b. 1970) is a conceptual artist who works in a variety of ways including weaving, film, sculpture, and video, which all engage with ideas of Zen Buddhism and pragmatist philosophy. Similar to Buddhist thought, Mirra holds a skepticism towards language and looks to other methods like walking as a way of thinking without using a linguistic system. "[Walking] is an unskilled activity, and a modest activity, and a free activity, and an always-available activity, and an equipment-free activity, and an active activity,” Mirra explains. The endless ways, methods, and places to walk provides Mirra with a poetic endeavor to discover the world and her own being. Mirra describes herself as “A walking experiment. Undertaking to meet materials and non-materials.” Mirra’s fabric works are minimalistic weavings that suggest landscape and travel, and have a thoughtful geometry to them that relates to her walking practice as she observes angles and turns of certain places. The muted browns, yellows, and blues connect visually to fields, soil, and open skies. The careful stitches and purposeful shapes of color hold a powerful contemplative reserve.
