Artists have a variety of methods to make their mark. Every Friday we will share a photograph of an #ArtistInAction.

Fred Tomaselli (b. 1956) is an American artist who has a unique way of working in collage and painting to create pre-modernist and illusive compositions on wood panel. Using varnishes and epoxies to seal unorthodox materials like prescription pills and hallucinatory plants onto the panel, which is also assembled with cut-out pictures from magazines, Tomaselli constructs fantastical and beckoning collage works. With culled imagery and visual inspiration from his 1970s Californian upbringing, Romanticism, field guide magazines, and from his own hobbies of bird-watching, gardening, and kayaking, the wood panel surfaces embody a breadth of influence that culminates in alluring patterns with captivating enchantment. “It is my ultimate aim to seduce and transport the viewer into the space of these pictures while simultaneously revealing the mechanics of that seduction”....Tomaselli says. “I want people to get lost in the work. I want to seduce people into it and I want people to escape inside the world of the work. In that way the work is pre-Modernist. I throw all of my obsessions and loves into the work, and I try not to be too embarrassed about any of it. I love nature, I love gardening, I love watching birds, and all of that gets into the work. I just try to be true to who I am and make the work I want to see. I don’t have a radical agenda.”
