Open Sessions Artist 2018-20: LaMont Hamilton when did you decide to become an artist, and why?

“I don’t think I decided to be an artist as much as I was impelled. I see myself in the tradition of those who view the artist as a calling. One doesn’t simply choose to be an artist (in this formulation) but is called, deeply. Wandering around the space of wonder. It wasn’t until I decided to turn these investigations over to the world for consideration did I decide to become an artist. This dialogic capacity of art both fascinates me and invigorates my practice.” - LaMont Hamilton

LaMont Hamilton lives and works in New York. His work has been shown at MoMA, The Kitchen, and the Studio Museum in New York.
