Sonia Boyce (b. 1962) is a British Afro-Caribbean artist that has worked in several mediums throughout her career including drawing, photography, and installation to explore the sociopolitical position of the black female body in white British society. Boyce explains: “The constant in my work has always been a discussion around gender, race and sexuality; it was never just about me but, more broadly, about the role and representation of the black female figure. Growing up in Britain in the 1960s and ’70s, I felt the historical and cultural narratives about the black female subject were quite limited.” In her early career, Boyce was a part of the Black British cultural renaissance of 1980s and was known for her pastel drawings that featured domestic life and childhood experiences with striking backgrounds of wallpaper with Caribbean patterns. Many of her drawings are self-portraits that express the complexity of her own identity. Boyce later turned to more collaborative work with performance artists to explore art as a social practice. The performances use improvisation and spontaneity to foster an open debate around cultural issues in a collective setting. Boyce’s work is a thoughtful investigation into the cultural positioning of Afro-Caribbean art to criticize the British exclusionary socio political system.
