Artists have a variety of methods to make their mark. Every Friday we will share a photograph of an #ArtistInAction.
.
Do Ho Suh (b. 1962) is a South Korean installation artist that explores concepts of home and domestic space through his site-specific architectural structures. Suh’s expert craftsmanship results in precise drawings, small-scale sculptures, and installations that are intimate investigations into cultural identity, migration, and transitory states. Trained formally by Korean artisans, Suh fashions together impeccable structures from semi-transparent fabric to create ghostly renditions of hallways and bedrooms. These works, known as “fabric architecture,” are delicate but tangible replications of Suh’s past homes in cities that he used to live in. Suh stitches the fabric together using traditional Korean sewing techniques and 3-D modelling technology. At once otherworldly and familiar, the colorful passageways and hallways modelled after Suh’s previous places of residence points to the ever-changing nature of our idea of “home” especially within a technologically advanced and globalized world. The fabric architectural structures create a sense of being and not being within a specific place and give an impression of being in constant flux. "I see life as a passageway, with no fixed beginning or destination," Suh explains. "We tend to focus on the destination all the time and forget about the in-between spaces." “One: Do Ho Suh” is on view at the Brooklyn Museum through January 27th.
