Open Sessions Artist 2018-20: Esteban Cabeza de Baca when did you decide to become an artist, and why?
.
“For me it wasn't a choice but the only way I could express myself growing up. I didn't start speaking until I was five years old so drawing and painting were outlets for me. My parents took me to a speech therapist and on the first visit got me to start speaking. I think back about growing up along the border and being in such an intense political household and all that I saw. Drawing and painting was my voice in this intense but nurturing environment. Art became a space to contemplate who I am and make something beautiful out of my experience.”- Esteban Cabeza de Baca
.
Esteban Cabeza de Baca lives and works in New York. His work has been shown at the Fons Welters Gallery, Amsterdam; David Richard Gallery, Santa Fe; Dickinson Gallery, New York; Gaa Gallery, Provincetown and Wellfleet.
Open Sessions is a two year artist program of interdisciplinary events and exhibitions focused on drawing, organized by Rosario Güiraldes and Lisa Sigal.
