Open Sessions Conversations: Jina Valentine & Sheree Hovsepian
.
JV: “I have a few explanations in relation to my preference for found materials over blank substrates. One of those concerns the history inherent in the found object––it offers the possibility for a conversation or a negotiation with the object rather than an imposition or a monologue.”
.
SH: “A driving factor in my art making is my need to find a mark that feels essential. I like the possibility that words––like marks on a drawing––could communicate something fundamental about living.”
.
Jina Valentine lives and works in Durham. Her work has been shown at the Lisa Dent Gallery, San Francisco; The Studio Museum, New York; and The Weatherspoon Museum, Greensboro.
.
Sheree Hovsepian lives and works in New York. Her work has been shown at the Wentrup Gallery, Berlin; Etemad Gallery, Dubai; and Monique Meloche Gallery, Chicago.
.
