Bharti Kher (b. 1969) is a London-born New Delhi-based artist that works in sculpture, painting, and installation. Kher’s use of contradicting media is part of her overall practice that blends, fuses, and combines elements that showcases her boundless imagination. In her sculptures, Kher combines animal species and plants together that confound biological distinctions to create an original otherworldly creature. Kher also uses a wide array of mythologies and folklore into her work to present a reimagination of Modern India. “I’m still not interested in the thread [that’s] supposed to connect me all together with my work or otherwise,” she explains. “We are all hybrids and totally unpredictable. I wanted to make that apparent in my practice.” Influenced by surrealist sculpture and referencing Hindu gods and goddesses, Kher unites contrasting sources to create an inspiring fusion of ideas. The most common symbol that Kher uses is the Bindi, a forehead dot worn by Hindu women. Traditionally symbolizing the “third eye”, the Bindi has also been used to mark the marital woman and her place in society. It has also been commodified cosmetically for aesthetic beauty in Western media. The Bindi is interestingly placed at the intersection religion, spirituality, domesticity, and appropriation, and has been a useful symbolic tool for Kher to explore these topics. Kher’s innovative and amalgamated works challenge tradition and imagine exhilarating possibilities for the future of womankind.
