Artists have a variety of methods to make their mark. Every Friday we will share a photograph of an #ArtistInAction. 〰️
Marilyn Minter (b. 1948) is a New-York based artist who explores sexuality, beauty, and glamour in her explicit photorealist paintings and photography. Often featuring women wearing heavy makeup or gaudy fashion, Minter creates her photorealist paintings using photographs she took herself. Without any digital editing, Minter uses the photographs as references to combine elements from each into a single picture of garish beauty. Usually made with enamel paint on metal, Minter’s large-scale works are loud and mesmerizing in their glossy surfaces. Both beautiful and vulgar, Minter’s images are inspired by fashion magazines, but combines that aesthetic with graphic imperfections like sweat, spit, and acne. The juxtaposition of blemishes with glamourous blue eyeshadow or bright lipstick exposes the false promise of these products to deliver perfection. “The ongoing theme in my work is fashion and glamour. I’m always looking for the paradox.” Minter explains. “The idea of glamour is so shallow, so debased, and yet it gives people so much pleasure and is a huge industry. I have a love/hate relationship with it.” The simultaneously imperfect but alluring paintings expands our idea of beauty as something that could be explicit, disturbing, and even ugly.
