Artists have a variety of methods to make their mark. Every Friday we will share a photograph of an #ArtistInAction.
Marjane Satrapi (b. 1969) is an Iranian comic artist best known for her autobiographical graphic novel “Persepolis,” which won worldwide acclaim for its groundbreaking storytelling. The two-part story chronicles her experiences as a child through young adulthood in Tehran. Satrapi’s family were politically active Marxists and were targeted by the Muslim fundamentalists who took power after the 1979 Iranian Revolution. While in prison, Satrapi’s uncle told her: “Our family memory must not be lost. Even though it’s not easy for you, even if you don’t understand it all.” Satrapi decided to tell her story through black and white comics with a candid voice that helps illuminate life in Iran through a personal lens. “...I had to create it from a very personal point of view, otherwise it would be this boring, anonymous person…. As soon as you start to talk about a nation, what is a nation? I mean, are all British people the same? Of course not. You have all sorts of people. So one person you—the reader—can identify with; a nation you can’t identify with.” Satrapi’s use of saturated black ink gives the story a boldness that matches the attitude of the author. Frustrated by the prejudiced assumptions made about her country, Satrapi divulged her life to complicate the narrative about the East perpetuated by the media. “And from everything I’ve seen in the world,” she explains. “I’ve realized it’s not a question of where you come from, it’s a question of intelligence. And intelligence is something you share with some people in the world that is completely independent of the nationality, color, height— all of that.” 〰️
For this week and next, we are featuring cartoonists in honor of FUNHOUSE - an interactive book fair taking place next weekend [Mar 24 + 25]. For more information, please use the link in our bio! funhousebookfair
