Torkwase Dyson is an abstract painter whose thoughtfully composed paintings and sculptures deal with spatial relations between bodies and environments. Dyson’s careful geometric compositions are abstract visualizations of the way in which non-white bodies navigate the world. “My works are deconstructions of natural and built environments that influence black spatial conditions...In my drawings, paintings, and sculptures, I re-image side-walks, levees, slave castles, rivers, and auction blocks into minimal schematics that are mediations on human geographic development and belonging.” Dyson infuses spatial relations with historicity by elucidating the way in which our past created the environments we currently inhabit. Dyson explains that built environments, predicated as they are on infrastructure, architecture, and design produced by white corporate power, are racist: “Disenfranchised people of color have inherited this geographic isolation and can name it environmental racism.” Through her mindful manipulation of shape, line, and paint handling, Dyson explores these issues through the tool of drawing. “Change is happening now,” she says, “...and I understand contemporary abstract drawing as a major part of our current preparedness movement.” If you would like to learn more about Dyson’s practice, she will be holding public “office hours” during our Winter Term (Feb 24 - Mar 11) in our Main Gallery from Noon-4pm on Sat, Feb 24; Sun, Feb 25; Thurs, Mar 1; Sat, Mar 3; and Sun, Mar 4.
